Understanding Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an internationally recognized screening parameter established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to classify body weight relative to adult height. It provides a simple benchmark to identify potential weight-related health risks.
WHO BMI Classifications:
- Underweight (< 18.5): May indicate malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, or underlying medical conditions.
- Normal weight (18.5 – 24.9): Associated with the lowest risk of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders.
- Overweight (25.0 – 29.9): Increased likelihood of developing hypertension, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.
- Obesity (30.0 and above): Significantly elevated health risks; regular consultation with a healthcare professional is strongly recommended.
